Montara (2009)

A blowout occurred in August 2009 on the jack-up drilling rig West Atlas and the wellhead installation on the Montara field in the Timor Sea off Australia.

Nobody was killed, but the incident lasted for two months. As a relief well was being completed, the gas ignited and both rig and wellhead platform were destroyed by the subsequent fire.

This blowout is frequently cited together with the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico the following year. These two incidents focused great global attention on oil industry safety.

Many international studies, working parties and improvement initiatives were launched after the accidents, and these reviews are far from finished – and certainly not in Norway.
