Audit of engineering of load-bearing structures – Gudrun

On 15 October 2010, the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) conducted an audit of Statoil as regards the engineering of load-bearing structures on the Gudrun facility’s jacket.

The detailed engineering of jackets and piles on Gudrun is now nearing completion. The audit was carried out near a milestone in the project to ensure that sufficient documentation was available during start-up of the fabrication.

The audit was carried out at Aker Solutions at Fornebu.

Purpose
The purpose of the audit was to ensure that the engineering of the load-bearing structures is in accordance with applicable regulations. Based on random samples, the PSA reviewed documentation in connection with the engineering, with an emphasis on the fatigue analyses, determining weight and centre of gravity, as well as Statoil’s verifications and audit activity.

Results
The construction analyses are large and complicated. In conducting such analyses, a great deal must be done correctly or conservatively. The PSA’s impression was that the scope of errors was small. No breaches of regulatory provisions were identified.

However, the PSA does have some suggestions for improvement items as regards analyses of the use of followers with piling, documentation of elements in element analyses, use of coefficients in the analyses of wave loads and verification of the collision analyses.
