Ongoing operations on Tordis and Statfjord, as well as the order of Statoil and ENI’s exploration wells in the Barents Sea/Tromsøflaket, will determine when the drilling can start. Start-up could be in October 2010.

The operation has an estimated duration of 45 days.

Polar Pioneer is operated by Transocean Offshore

Polar Pioneer is a Sonat/Hitachi-designed, semi-submersible drilling facility, built in 1985.

The facility underwent main classification inspection at Hanøytangen in the summer of 2009.

During the stay at the shipyard, significant upgrades were carried out, such as a new driller’s cabin, main crane, main switchboard, chemical mixing system, management system for anchor winches, as well as a major overhaul of cranes and drilling equipment.

The facility received the PSA's Acknowledgement of Compliance in May 2004.
