Consent to carry out exploration drilling with Transocean Leader - well 15/3-U-7

The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) has given Statoil Petroleum AS (Statoil) consent to conduct exploration drilling in production licence 025 using the mobile drilling facility Transocean Leader.

The application applies to shallow gas pilot well 15/3-U-7 on the Gudrun field in production licence 025 in the North Sea.

The main objective of the well is to clarify any shallow gas before installing the Gudrun facility, checking the injection properties of the Utsira formation as well as defining the setting depth for 20" shoes before drilling production wells on Gudrun.

The planned activity has an estimated duration of nine days.

According to the application, the plan is to start drilling 15/3-U-7 as soon as the rig has completed drilling of well 15/3-9 for Statoil.

At the earliest, start-up would be mid-July 2010.

The well has the following geographical coordinates:

  • 58° 50' 42.6" North
  • 01° 44' 41.6" East

Water depth at the site is 109 metres.

The drilling location is about 15 kilometres south of the Glitne field, about nine kilometres east of the border with the UK sector and approx. 200 kilometres west of Karmøy.

The Transocean Leader (above) is a semi-submersible mobile drilling facility owned and operated by Transocean Offshore North Sea Ltd. It was delivered from Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea in 1987.

The facility received an Acknowledgement of Compliance (AoC) on 16 December 2004.
