Consent to carry out exploration drilling with West Alpha

Statoil Petroleum AS has received consent to carry out exploration drilling of well 6610/10-1 with the West Alpha mobile facility.

Well 6610/10-1 is part of production licence 386 in the Norwegian Sea.

The rig’s planned position when drilling well 6610/10-1 is:

  • 66° 14’ 09.52“ N
  • 10° 02’ 46.89” E

Water depth at the site is 244 metres. The drilling location is approx. 92 km NW of the Norne FPSO and approx. 130 km from Brønnøysund.

Drilling will start at the beginning of December 2012 at the earliest, with an estimated duration of 42 days.


West Alpha is a semi-submersible drilling facility, type Ultra Yatzy, built in 1986. The facility has been modified several times and is registered in Panama. Det Norske Veritas is the classification society.

West Alpha is operated by North Atlantic Drilling. The facility received an Acknowledgement of Compliance (AoC) in December 2001.
