Consent to carry out exploration drilling with West Hercules – wells 7220/5-2 and 7219/8-2

Statoil Petroleum AS (Statoil) has received consent to carry out exploration drilling with the West Hercules mobile drilling facility in the Barents Sea.


The consent relates to drilling of wells 7220/5-2 (production licence 532) and 7219/8-2 (production licence 608).

The planned position of the facility when drilling well 7220/5-2 is:

  • 72° 33' 40.29" North
  • 20° 23' 54.84" East

Water depth at the site is 398 metres.

The well has received the prospect name Nunatak.

The planned position of the facility when drilling well 7219/8-2 is:

  • 72° 19' 17.35" North
  • 19° 35' 21.13" East

Water depth at the site is 344 metres.

The well has received the prospect name Iskrystall.

The wells are located approx. 38 km apart and both are approx. 200 kilometres from nearest land.

7220/5-2 will be drilled first. This drilling operation is scheduled to start in the last half of April.

West Hercules is a 6th generation semi-submersible mobile drilling facility built in 2008 at Daewoo Shipyard, South Korea. The facility can operate at water depths from 100 to 3000 metres.

The operations contractor for West Hercules is North Atlantic Drilling with operations offices at Dusavik in Stavanger. The rig is registered in Panama and Det Norske Veritas is the classification society.

West Hercules received an Acknowledgement of Compliance (AoC) from the PSA on 21 December 2012.
