The well will first be drilled to test the oil-water contact in an adjacent formation. The lower part of the well will then be permanently plugged and the production well will be drilled and completed using a sidetrack into the producing formation. When the well is completed, it will be tied in to the production facility on the Norne field, which is located about 16 kilometres northeast of Alve.

The well has the following geographical coordinates: N 65° 58’ 06.398”, E 07° 48’ 36.374”. Water depth at the site is 368 metres.

The drilling will start, at the earliest, on 15 May 2010 and has an estimated duration of  60 - 75 days.

West Alpha (pictured) is a semi-submersible mobile drilling facility of the type “Dyvi Drilling Ultra Yatzy”. It was built in 1986.

The facility, which is owned and operated by Seadrill Offshore AS, received an  Acknowledgement of Compliance (AoC) in December 2001 (link).
