PSA to investigate gas leak on Visund

The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) has decided to start an investigation following a gas leak on the Visund field on 9 April.

The Visund field is operated by Statoil. The field is located in the northern part of the North Sea and is developed with a integrated semi-submersible living quarters, drilling and process facility – Visund A.

When the leak was discovered, 123 people were on board the facility. 63 of these were evacuated to other facilities in the area.

The PSA established the emergency preparedness centre after receiving notification of the leak at 08.30 on Saturday morning.

On Saturday afternoon, Statoil reported that the leak had been stopped and the situation was in the process of being normalised.

The PSA's task during an emergency situation is to ensure that the operator follows the regulatory requirements, including a continuous evaluation of the measures implemented to control the situation.
