Audit of pipelines and risers on Kristin

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) has conducted an audit directed at Statoil's work with pipelines and risers for Kristin.

The audit was conducted through meetings, talks and verifications with the project and the operator and suppliers from 22 to 25 September 2003.

Background for the audit

Important priorities for the NPD's HES follow-up are to ensure that the players facilitate and maintain technical integrity on installations and contribute to the transfer of experience between players.

One of the NPD's performance goals is to contribute to minimizing costs associated with the risk of material damage and unintentional disruption of operations.

In recent years there have been a number of incidents on the Norwegian shelf that show a lack of robustness in the choice of materials for subsea facilities and pipelines.

Sub-projects for pipelines and risers are important for the Kristin development. There are major challenges regarding pressure and temperature. The need for technology qualification has been identified for both the pipeline and riser projects.

Purpose of the audit

The purpose of this audit was to follow up that engineering and fabrication of pipelines and risers for Kristin were planned and implemented in accordance with the current regulatory requirements and recognized norms for pipelines and risers.

Result of the audit

The result of the audit shows that a lot of good work is being done in both sub-projects, but there is a potential for improvement in areas such as management and organization, implementation of analyses, consistency in documentation, coordination between the operator and suppliers and some technical matters.
