Consent to conduct exploration drilling with West Alpha – well 35/9-5

Consent: Nexen Exploration Norge AS has received consent to conduct exploration drilling in the northern North Sea with the mobile facility West Alpha.


The consent relates to the drilling of well 35/9-5, which is part of production licence 419. The well is located between Gjøa and Vega, about 70 km southwest of Florø (see map).

Location of the well

The well has the following geographical coordinates:

N 61° 19’ 28.90”, E 3° 48’ 45.19”. The water depth at the site is 365 metres.

Planned start-up of drilling is set for 19 December 2009, and the activity has an estimated duration of about 45 days.

West Alpha is an Ultra Yatzy drilling facility, built in 1986. The facility has been modified several times, and is registered in Panama with Det Norske Veritas as classification society.

West Alpha is operated by Seadrill, with operations office in Stavanger. The facility received an Acknowledgement of Compliance (AoC) in December 2001.
