Consent to exploration drilling and use of Transocean Leader on well 15/3-8

The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) has granted its consent to Statoil for exploration drilling with the Transocean Leader (photo) for well 15/3-8, situated north of the Glitne field in the North Sea.

Well 15/3-8 in production license 025 is an appraisal well on the Gudrun discovery. The purpose of the well is to prove hydrocarbons in reservoir sands belonging to the Draupne formation, as well as to obtain sufficient information to determine whether the Gudrun discovery can be developed commercially.

It is expected that this well will be the last before a potential PDO. After completion of the drilling operation, the well will be permanently plugged.

The earliest estimated spud date for well 15/3-8 is 1 august 2005. The drilling activity is expected to take 95 days. A production test is also planned.

Licensees in production license 025 are:

  • Statoil ASA (operator) 46.8%
  • Gaz de France Norge AS 12.5%
  • BP Norge AS 12.5%
  • Marathon Petroleum Norge AS 28.2%

Transocean Leader is an Aker H-4.2 semi-submersible drilling facility, built in 1987 and upgraded in 1997. The facility received an AoC on 16 February 2004 (link to article).
