Consent to exploration drilling of three wells in the Barents Sea

The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) has granted its consent to Eni Norge for use of the Eirik Raude to drill three wells near the well 7722/7-1 Goliat in the Barents Sea.

The three wells are 7122/7-3, 7122/7-4 and 7122/7-5 in production license 229.

Eni Norge AS is operator, with an ownership interest of 65 percent. The other licensees are Statoil (20 percent) and Det norske Oljeselskap (15 percent).

The three wells are located northwest of Hammerfest, and the shortest distance to land is 48 km. The plan is to drill the wells using the semi-submersible drilling facility "Eirik Raude".

The exploration drilling activity is expected to last for about 130 days, and the earliest possible start-up date is 19 August 2005. Drilling in oil-bearing strata is permitted during the period from 1 September 2005 to 15 January 2006.

Our decision is based on the application submitted by Eni Norge AS, with supplementary documentation showing that the planned operations can be carried out in accordance with applicable regulations.

The consent is granted under conditions set forth in the Acknowledgement of Compliance (AoC) for the Eirik Raude, issued on 15 September 2004, with the obligations this entails for the rig owner and the operator.
