Consent - underbalanced drilling on Gullfaks C

The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) has granted Statoil ASA consent to use underbalanced drilling technology to drill the cap rock in Well C-05 from the Gullfaks C platform.

Gullfaks C

Due to little difference between the pore pressure and the fracturing pressure, it has become steadily more difficult to carry out conventional drilling on Gullfaks C.

Statoil has therefore considered alternative methods of drilling the problem zone.

The method chosen by the company was underbalanced drilling.

The initial consent for Gullfaks C did not include this type of operations and the PSA therefore requested a new application for consent for the first well.

In its application the company describes the equipment and methods to be used and the assessments, analyses and training initiatives that have been implemented for the planned operation.

On the basis of the submitted documentation and the clarifications received in this regard, the PSA has granted its consent for the implementation of the above activity on Gullfaks C.
