Global website for HSE research in the petroleum sector

Press release: On behalf of ICRARD, a forum of authorities, the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) has developed a new website - www.icrard.org. The website, which was officially launched on 28 October in the USA, provides a global overview of research and development projects in the fields of health, safety and the environment (HSE) within the petroleum activities. In addition is its advanced search engine, which is adjusted to only index selected websites in the individual member countries.

"The oil and gas activities are among the world's most international activities, with large international companies operating in several countries. There is also a lot of exciting HSE research and development work going on simultaneously in individual countries. Our objective is to help make this important knowledge known across national borders. The ICRARD website is an effective channel in achieving this," says Øyvind Tuntland, director for professional competence at the PSA, and the Norwegian ICRARD representative.

ICRARD (International Committee on Regulatory Research and Development) was formed in 1994 as an arena for sharing information and experiences in HSE research within petroleum acitivities. American, Canadian, British and Norwegian authorities took the initiative, and over the years the authorities of other countries have joined the cooperation forum.

The ICRARD annual meeting in 2003 decided to establish a separate website in order to increase accessibility to and the quality of the information flow. The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate - as of 1 January 2004 the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) -, assumed responsibility for developing the website, and operating it for two years.

The development of www.icrard.org is financed through earmarked project funds from the former Ministry of Labour and Government Administration, allocated following a proposal for HSE measures in Storting White Paper No. 7 - 2000-2001 ("The HSE White Paper").

Free flow of information
www.icrard.org primarily has information on HSE-related research and development projects in the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom and Norway. The website will, however, also have relevant overviews from the other member countries, which include Brazil, Mexico, the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand.

In addition, www.icrard.org contains information on ICRARD contact persons, as well as links to the relevant authorities, research projects and institutions in the individual member countries.

In connection with major news on petroleum-related HSE research, articles related to this will be published on the ICRARD website. It is possible to subscribe to the website, and be notified by e-mail when new articles are published. All information is published in English only.

www.icrard.org contains information on research and development projects in a range of technical areas, such as drilling and wells, construction safety, transport, human factors, the working environment, and external environment issues. Director for professional competence Øyvind Tuntland emphasises that many of the research and development projects are also relevant to sectors other than the petroleum activities. He notes that the website's intended target groups include research communities, authorities, and industry.

Unique search engine
A highlight of the www.icrard.org is its advanced search engine, which is adjusted to only index selected websites in the individual member countries. The search engine therefore provides a quick and effective overview of the research that has been done in the fields on which you want information, with related information on contact persons, associated research communities/projects, etc.

At the time of the launch, there are 21 websites included in the search engine, and more websites will be indexed continuously.

The search engine therefore underlines the ICRARD slogan: "Sharing information - connecting people".
