Investigating falling object incident on Kvitebjørn

The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) has initiated an investigation following a serious falling object incident on Kvitebjørn, operated by Statoil, on 4 July. A drillpipe weighing more than 900 kilograms fell 26 meters and landed in a container. Nobody was injured.

The 917 kilogram piece of drillpipe slipped out of the grip clamp and fell down into an area that was not cordoned off.

No persons were close when the accident took place.

The following day, the PSA decided to initiate an investigation of the incident, which we characterise as very serious.

We are simultaneously assisting the police in their investigation of the incident.

The operator, Statoil, is also investigating the incident at Kvitebjørn.
