A person employed in a contractor company suffered knee injuries when a load weighing approx. 700 kg tipped over during a lifting operation in connection with rig upgrade work on Ekofisk X. The injured person received immediate medical treatment and was then transported to land via helicopter. The area where the incident occurred has been cordoned off pending further investigation.
This is the third serious incident on Ekofisk in January. On 5 January, a bearing housing weighing 70-80 kg fell to the deck on Ekofisk X. On 7 January, a load weighing 400-600 kg tipped and fell on Ekofisk J. Two persons were present in the immediate area. Fortunately, no one was injured in these incidents.
Overall, however, the PSA feels that the many incidents on the ConocoPhillips-operated Ekofisk field in recent weeks justify implementation of an investigation. The PSA's three-person investigation team will be traveling to the Ekofisk field this evening.
