Preventing major accidents occupies a key place in the PSA’s supervision of the eight land-based petroleum plants it regulates. Risk assessments at these derive ultimately from an Italian disaster.
The incident on the Ekofisk 2/4-B installation was the first serious uncontrolled oil blowout on the NCS, and began on 22 April 1977 during maintenance work on a production well.
Installations on the NCS are getting steadily older. The question is what implications this aging process has for major accident risk.
